Worden Park

Sightseeing attraction | Leyland | England | United Kingdom

Worden Park in Leyland, England, is an award-winning public park that is considered one of the most popular green spaces in Lancashire. Covering an area of approximately 64 hectares, it offers a mix of natural beauty, historical elements, and diverse recreational opportunities that attract both locals and visitors. The park is located in the heart of Leyland, a small town south of Preston, and is known for its well-maintained gardens, expansive grasslands, and family-friendly attractions. It was created in the 19th century by the Farington family, who originally used the land as part of their private estate before it was handed over to the community after World War II to make it accessible to the public.

One of the central features of Worden Park is Worden Hall, a historic building that now serves as a venue for weddings, community meetings, and cultural events. The mansion, partly dating back to the 17th century, has been renovated and expanded over time, with some of the original structures preserved. It is surrounded by formal gardens that impress with intricately designed flowerbeds, fountains, and ancient trees. These gardens are a sanctuary for visitors seeking tranquility and provide a picturesque backdrop for strolls.

Another highlight of the park is the miniature railway operated by the Leyland Society of Model Engineers. These fully functional scaled-down trains run on a specially laid track through the park and are particularly popular with children and train enthusiasts. Models like the GWR King Class, a faithful reproduction of historical locomotives, showcase the craftsmanship and passion of the operators. The railway operates regularly and provides a charming way to experience the park from a different perspective.

The park is also a paradise for nature lovers. A large wooded area crisscrossed with streams and walking paths invites for leisurely walks. The woods are home to a variety of wildlife, including squirrels, birds, and occasionally foxes, making the park an ideal spot for nature observations. Along the paths, there are hidden corners like the labyrinth, made of hedges and providing an adventurous atmosphere, especially for younger visitors. The open grasslands are perfect for picnics, ball games, or simply relaxing in the sun.

For families, Worden Park offers numerous attractions. The large playground with slides, swings, and climbing frames is a magnet for children, while the nearby crazy golf course promises fun for all ages. A small pond with ducks and other waterfowl adds an idyllic touch to the park and is a popular spot for feeding the animals. Additionally, there are craft shops housed in former stables offering local products such as ceramics, jewelry, and woodworking. These shops add an extra cultural dimension to the park.

Worden Park is also a venue for community activities. In the summer, regular events take place here, including concerts, markets, and the so-called "X-Plorer" event, a free program for children that sends them on discovery tours through the park. These events contribute to the lively atmosphere and make the park a meeting point for the local population. The paths are well-maintained and mostly accessible, making the park also suitable for older visitors or those with limited mobility.

Despite its many advantages, there are some minor criticisms. On particularly busy days, the park can be overcrowded, especially near the playground and the miniature railway. Parking may also become scarce during large events, although overflow parking is available. Nevertheless, the park is appreciated for its cleanliness and the variety of offerings. An on-site café provides refreshments with a selection of snacks, ice cream, and drinks, while visitors can also bring their own picnics.

Since opening to the public, Worden Park has become a cherished destination that harmoniously combines history, nature, and leisure. Whether for a peaceful walk through the gardens, an active day out with the family, or experiencing local culture, the park offers a diverse experience that highlights the uniqueness of Leyland. Its Green Flag Award recognizes the high quality and care that make this place a must-visit for nature and history enthusiasts.

Amazing playground - downside is you need 20p if your child needs the toilet. Scandalous when you consider there are free toilets elsewhere in the park! Would be 5 star if not for that!

One of the best dog walking routes in the area mainly because you and your dog get to meet other wonderful dogs (which there are a lot of).

Visit to Worden Park, Leyland, Lancashire. A large area of parkland and woodland, spanning over 60 hectares. Also a well maintained children's play area (no dogs allowed in this part), duck ponds, wild flower areas to attract wild insects, a crazy golf area, miniature railway (run by volunteers) - check opening times! An area with Independent arts and crafts and cafe serving hot and cold food/drinks & ice creams in the summer months. This park is very well maintained and I would think it is a national flagship. Parking would appear to be an issue. One public car park is open mid week with 2 hours maximum stay and no return within 3 hours. Outside of school/ college term time a second and much larger car park becomes available. The reason - the car parks were permanently full and being used by students from a close by college, therefore daytime visitors had no place to park. This park is very popular with dog walkers both on the park and in the woodland, which runs alongside the park to the south side. Here you will find various walkways, streams and bridges for dogs and owners to enjoy. There are also public toilets available towards the center of the park. Beyond the children's play area are several football pitches, used by local teams during the season. A highly recommended park to visit other than parking restriction times and so please bear this in mind.
